Reruns of KLIF Wheels Never Air, But It Still Has All Been Heard Before
2023 September 23
2023 September 24 (UPDATE)

Good morning. Today on 'It's Ed’s Mind', we examine the phenomenon of déjà vu. That strange feeling we sometimes get that we've lived through something before. That what is happening now, has already happened. At the start of KLIF Wheels’ show of September 16th, the opening snark concluded with the following:

Wheels with David El Attrache and John Ingram
KLIF 570 AM - September 16, 2023 8:03AM

Don Grantham

“And now the two guys who believe…

What’s the use of happiness
if it can’t buy you money?

It’s these guys!”

At that point, the audience was hit with this terrible feeling of déjà vu. This is because during the start of the prior Saturday show of September 9th, the audience heard opening snark that concluded as follows:

Wheels with David El Attrache and John Ingram
KLIF 570 AM - September 9, 2023 8:03AM

Don Grantham

“And now the two guys who believe…

What’s the use of happiness
if it can’t buy you money?

It’s these guys!”

That is why today on 'It's Ed’s Mind', we examine the phenomenon of déjà vu. That strange feeling we sometimes get that we've lived through something before. That what is happening now, has already happened.

Squeals with Ed Wallace: With Ed Wallace, it's deja vu all over again.

To appreciate the above cultural reference, the déjà vu skit from Monty Python’s Flying Circus is submitted for your approval:

Ed Wallace frequently brags that in his many years of hosting Wheels, he has never missed a show and aired a rerun. Of course, that feat is made easier when the material has been previously aired.  Case in point, for the past two consecutive Saturdays, Wallace repeats the same “joke” within the show’s opening snark. This was not a case of where Grantham verbally mangled a “joke” one week, so it’s used the next one.

Duplicated Snark

“Wealth always conveys the aspect of intelligence.”

Wallace has lazily reused show opening snark from the past many times before. Worst still, whereas the quality of those comments is usually poor and unfunny, one expects at least a unique set each week considering that the effort required for such is so low.

The rest of the Wheels show of September 16th was not without other instances where listeners have this terrible feeling of déjà vu. At 11:24AM, Wallace again tells his story of the corporate shrink, where the shrink instructs then car dealer general manager Ed “that he is so far of ahead of his staff, he cannot be distinguished from the enemy”. Listeners have already heard this thinly disguised self praise many times, with his June 4, 2022 rendition identifying the shrink as Keith Peterson.

That was soon followed by Wallace complaining about Sheryl Crow’s vocals on the song Everyday Is A Winding Road, a complaint that he repeats almost every time that bumper music plays.

Week in, week out, for at least the past decade, Wallace brings precious little that is new to his show. And as such, so goes the slow unwinding of Ed Wallace’s Lying Sourpuss on 570 KLIF.

-- UPDATE: 2023 SEPTEMBER 24  --

Right from the start of the September 23rd Wheels show, listeners suffered this terrible feeling of déjà vu. And it really was déjà vu all over again, for Wallace’s opening snark again contained reused material.

“Capitalism defeated communism. And now it’s on the way to defeating democracy too.”

While finding the specific date of a duplicate for the September 23rd snark took much too long, the search revealed additional recent instances of repeated opening snark. Here is a sampling of these found duplicates:

Dates

Duplicated Snark

2023JUN03
2023MAR11
2022MAR19

“Nothing funny about today’s political jokes, as they win elections all too often.”

2022JUN04
2022FEB12
2020SEP05

“State legislators are just politicians whose darkest secrets keep them from seeking higher office.”

2023JUL29
2022JAN29

“Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, the reverse is true.”

So, while no broadcast of Wheels is technically a rerun, the repetitious content causes all shows to encroach on that territory. This undermines Wallace’s claim of a “sense of duty to his sponsors to be live, on-air every Saturday” that he too frequently touts.
