In the radio business, music is often played when transitioning to or from a commercial break. This music is called a “bumper”. The bumpers of the KLIF Wheels radio show follow a regular pattern, with some well defined variances. This report documents Ed Wallace’s bumper strategy for the broadcast’s current form, which began November 5, 2022 and airs for four hours every Saturday from 8:00AM to 12:00PM CST.
|
Some bumpers occur weekly (every Saturday). The following table documents these:

For bumpers not attached to the top-of-hour or a recurring segment, Wallace employs a playlist. The playlist consists of what songs to play within a specific hour when returning from a commercial break.
The number of these bumpers can vary during the first two hours of Wheels, because a long Classic Tracks or Backside of American History segment can cause one or more commercial breaks to be skipped. Bumper music is only played within the hour to which it is assigned (8, 9, 10, and 11). Bumper music does not rollover to the next hour. For example, if the last commercial break is dropped from the 8 o’clock hour, the associated song is also dropped and the 9 o’clock hour starts with the first song assigned to the 9 o’clock hour. It is not uncommon for human error (i.e. playing the same song twice in a row) to cause violations of this process.
There are 20 playlists, so each playlist runs once every 20 weeks. The following tables document these playlists, assigning each with a letter of the alphabet.

-- CORRECTION (2023 December 24) --
During the December 23rd
2023 edition of Wheels, Don Grantham alerted the audience to the fact
that the bumper 11.B2 for Playlist T is a
combination of Spirit in the Sky (Norman Greenbaum) with
La Grange (ZZ Top), and not only Spirit in the Sky. Outside Automotive
regrets the error and has updated the guide accordingly.
Also of
note is that the December 9th 2023 edition of Wheels skipped over
Playlist Q. This was likely an error by Wheels, as was the case of playing
Playlist D twice in a row in September, 2023.
-- UPDATE (2023 December 31) --
The December 30th 2023
edition of Wheels cycled back to Playlist A. During this playing, it was noted
that Eric Clapton’s song After Midnight
holds the 9.B1 slot. The source for the table was the bumpers played during the
March 25th 2023 edition of Wheels, where that song was skipped to
play The Jimi Hendrix Experience song All
Along the Watchtower in that slot. The bumper table for Playlist A has been
updated accordingly.
-- UPDATE (2024 January 14) --
The January 13th 2024
edition of Wheels aired Playlist C, aligns with date progression established by
this guide. During this airing, it was noted that Boston’s song More Peace of Mind holds the 8.B2 slot.
The source for the table was the bumpers played during the April 8th
2023 edition of Wheels, where that song was skipped to play The Thin Lizzy song
The Boys Are Back in Town in that
slot. The bumper table for Playlist C has been updated accordingly.
This discrepancy was noted during
subsequent airing of Playlist C, but the corrections were misapplied and
injected errors into the bumpers listed for slots 8.B3, 9.B1, and 9.B2. Outside
Automotive regrets these errors.
-- UPDATE (2024 January 27) --
The January 27th 2024
edition of Wheels aired Playlist E, which aligns with the date progression
established by this guide. During this airing, it was noted that the positions
of the two known bumpers for the 9 o’clock hour have a swapped order. This
ordering matches the original airing of Playlist E on December 3rd
2022.
The source for the table was the
bumpers played during the April 22nd 2023 edition of Wheels, where
only Dude Looks Like A Lady by
Aerosmith was aired as bumper 9.B1 and no bumper was aired in the 9.B2 slot.
The next airing for Playlist E was September 16th 2023, where Don’t You (Forget About Me) by Simple
Minds was aired as bumper 9.B1 and no bumper was aired in the 9.B2 slot.
-- CORRECTION / UPDATE (2024 February 26) --
The February 24th 2024
edition of Wheels aired Playlist I, which aligns with the date progression
established by this guide. During this airing, Don Grantham alerted the
audience to the fact that the bumper 8.B2 for
Playlist I is Somebody (Bryan Adams). It was erroneously listed as It’s in the Way That You Use It (Eric Clapton). Outside Automotive
regrets the error and has updated the guide accordingly.
Some contention also arose regarding
the performer for bumper 8.B3. The song is I Only Want To
Be With You, which was
originally released by Dusty Springfield in 1964. The AHA
Music Song Finder identifies the ♫
bumper audio aired by KLIF Wheels as I Only Want To Be With You (Eliot Goshman Stereo Remix), which is a
1997 collaboration of Dusty Springfield and Eliot Goshman. Yet, Don Grantham asserted
that this was the works of Ed Wallace. It could be an unreleased artifact from
Wallace’s DFW Power & Light Orchestra venture in the UK that incorporated
the London Symphony in 2008. Whereas there is no provenance available to
validate Grantham’s assertion, Outside Automotive concludes that the best path
is to leave the attribution unchanged, as Dusty Springfield and her original
release have the strongest claim on the material.
-- UPDATE (2024 March 10) --
The March 9th 2024 edition of Wheels aired Playlist K, which aligns with the date progression recorded by this guide. During this airing, Don Grantham noted that bumper 8.B2 is a mash-up of two versions of the song You Really Got Me, with The Kinks’ version combined with Van Halen’s cover. The table had originally attributed the entire 8.B2 bumper to Van Halen, but has been updated to include The Kinks.
-- UPDATE (2024 April 22) --
The April 20th 2024
edition of Wheels aired Playlist Q, which aligns with the schedule recorded by
this guide. This was the first airing of Playlist Q where the Backside of
American History segment was short enough for a second bumper to have been
aired within the 9 o’clock hour. As such, the song Change of Heart by Tom Petty & the
Heartbreakers was revealed as the music slotted for bumper 9.B2.
During this airing, Don
Grantham implied that the song Summer of
’69 by Bryan Adams was the bumper 10.B2. The AHA
Music Song Finder confirms this guide’s identification of that ♫ bumper audio aired by KLIF Wheels as Bryan Adams’ This Time.
-- UPDATE (2024 August 7) --
The May 18th 2024 edition of Wheels aired Playlist A. The song Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer was revealed as the music slotted for bumper 9.B3. Somehow this entry has been omitted despite that bumper being present during the initial airing of Playlist A on November 5, 2022.
